With Superbowl 47 finally behind us, this Baltimore resident might finally get some peace. While I live in the “Old Line” state I’m certainly not a native and the overhype of the Harbowl, deer antler spray gate, the great Superdome blackout and Ray Lewis’ “Last Ride” (can’t tell me he doesn’t have that copywrited) has been nearly too much to take. With any luck, and the 24 hour news cycle, hopefully the Ravens rhetoric will disappear soon after the final piece of confetti hits the streets of the Charm City during tomorrow’s parade.
So you don’t think I’m a total grump, I was very happy and gave many high 5’s to my youngest Henry (7 YO) who didn’t take his Ray Rice jersey off for about a week before the game.
With that said about my opinion on the game, from a business perspective I’ve found myself viewing the Superbowl through a different lens the last several years, thinking more about the ads and their effectiveness than the game itself. While I realize that they say any PR is good PR, and I do not consider myself a prude, I have to say that I think that Budweiser’s “The Clydesdales: Brotherhood” and Ram Truck’s “Farmer” commercials are going to stick with me and have a longer shelf life than the controversial Coca-Cola “Mirage” and Go Daddy “Perfect Match” ads.
The coup of the night to me though seems to be the Oreo’s “You Can Still Dunk in the Dark” Twitter ad, posted in reaction to the black out in the Superdome. This very timely post was interesting to me more from a logistical and execution standpoint than anything. The Oreo brand team was in a “war room” with their ad and social media agencies during the game just in case an opportunity like this came up so that creative and approval process’ could be streamlined and almost instantaneous.
In this world of instant feedback and immediate attention spans being able to react that quickly makes the next day Disney Superbowl MVP “I’m Going to Disney World!” ads almost seem antiquated.
Now on to the real highlights of my sports year, March Madness and the Masters!!!
